Adhesive for gaskets?

#1

Post by BikeMaine »

Concerning valve cover gaskets...

My rubber gaskets are in great shape. I've just cleaned and painted covers. Should I use an adhesive to attach gaskets to covers?

Do I use adhesive between gaskets and heads?

Normally I would say No adhesive. But some older covers, and/or heads do not always have flat mating surfaces. I have experimented a bit with ill fitting ones, and have used 3M emblem cement , the yellow stuff. Always works for me

To calrify, I use it weatherstrip adhesive very sparingly to attach the gasket to the cover. Not enough that it will ever contact the sealing edge. I wouldn't use anything between the gasket and head. It is yellow and reminds me of snot, so it may be the same stuff that Cyborg and Kenny are talking about.

Agree with low-side and CYBORG. 3M yellow (definitely Elephant Snot) sparingly applied to insure gasket stays in place. Works like a charm. Oh, and usually applied just to the cover side so that the gasket stays with the cover - not the engine side.
