Re: Yet another Compression Testing topic!
Good for me! Why? Because I did my compression tests with the carb rack setting off the engine.

Nice to verify but I did not really expect much. I am sure there is some difference maybe a pound or or two but beyond most of our equipment to detect.
Nice to know that Virgin Engine of Oldewings's meets the spec.

Re: Yet another Compression Testing topic!
I'm glad you tested that theory, thank you for doing that and taking the time to let us know.
What is surprising to me is that if 170 is correct, a motor that is producing tests of 140 have lost nearly 20% compression. (17.6%)

Re: Yet another Compression Testing topic!
I should have mentioned before that the CBX numbers I noted in Post #2 (135-145 across six holes) were gathered engine stone cold, but with neither carbs nor exhaust installed. I should also say that those numbers are before the motor was re-started after a 10 year layup. Now that it's back to life, I plan to check again after a couple of hundred miles. I've always heard that the numbers after sitting can increase after some run-in. I'll know soon if that's the case for me.

Re: Yet another Compression Testing topic!
Great thread and many wise inputs.
As a newbie (to Goldwings not bikes in general) is compression testing something I should do to evaluate the state of my motor regarding whether to tear it down or not?
The bike has been sat for years and is definitely NOT an economical repair - its sole purpose is to keep me occupied/satisfied and out of my wife's way (in a purely positive way).
Obviously I'd like to hear the motor run before I begin a restoration, but equally I don't want to do any damage to the motor that may increase the cost and complexity of that resto.
Shall I do a compression test?

Re: Yet another Compression Testing topic!
What I have gleaned from others here is that flat motors’ rings can easily take a little sit in the pistons due to gravity and dried oil/fuel residue. (Speculation is they are stuck towards the bottom) When you first check compression after a long sit, they can be quite low, but after a few heat cycles, they free up and compression numbers increase.
So take a reading if you want, but take it again after 500 to 1000 miles.
As long as the pistons are rotating freely by hand turning, you are most likely fine.

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
