Coolant hose clamps

#1

Post by maury »

In restoring my '75 and '76 I'm trying to stay as close to original as possible. In trying to reuse these factory clamps - they are TOUGH to get on correctly and I'm struggling mightily. If the small extension piece does not slide under correctly, they bend.
Is there a trick I'm missing?

I think the clamps themselves are pretty good. The positions they have to be in, however, indicates that Satan was in on the design. I found that renovating the clamps before using them helps a lot. I wrote something about this a few years back but haven't been able to find it. The jist is: assemble the clamp loosely over a comparably sized piece of steel pipe mounted in a vise. Then turn and hammer the clamp to get the wrinkles out.
When assembling, put the clamp on the hose first and then pull a muscle trying to get the hose on the pipe. If you put the hose on first and try to stretch the clamp around, you'll bugger up the clamp. Good luck. Let's know how you do.

As usual, I used your written tutorial to accomplish the goal. Wasn't easy but I began to feel when the clamp was getting into a bind and then backed off and tried again until the extension slipped under and tightened down correctly.
Many many thanks........
