stuck in gear

I have been trying to get the LTD running before the move.... and it does not look like that will happen.
I have tried rocking the rear wheel

Right now it is stuck in gear. I tried taking the transmission cover off, but that did not change anything (on center stand). The only other thing I did when it was all apart was change the neutral switch (it must have been in gear when I did that). Also, the neutral light is on.

any group wisdom?

the first move is this weekend, but right now the LTD will be staying behind

I am no one way implying that you might be wrong about it being in gear, but do you suppose the clutch is just stuck, or perhaps rear brake (if mounted) is stuck? Will the rear wheel turn at all? Pop the plugs out if they aren't already, and try spinning it. How about the kick starter?

Again, I don't want to imply that you haven't done this, but more or less just giving ideas...

I have turned the wheel with the clutch in and got that unstuck (I thought of that might be it as well). I can turn the engine over with the starter

Just another thought, is the shifter hitting the header before it can hit neutral?

Turning it over and trying to change gears...does the shifter move at all?

last I tried, I had the transmission cover off. the shifter moves and I did it right at the shifter mechanism, but the shaft going into the engine will not move. If I get a chance this weekend to remove the neutral switch I will try that. Other than that, I will be in Virginia until August

You may be on to something with the neutral switch since it rides directly against the shift drum which needs to rotate smoothly to select the gears. Good luck on your move. I do not envy you with moving again.

I have been idling along looking for a reason the neutral switch would give you greif, but being that is something that was changed, it only reasons that something is slightly off.

The way the switch goes in it would pretty difficult to screw that up. Pretty basic install as far as things go.

I've had a couple bikes that really liked to stay in gear before. Often, starting the motor was how I got them out of gear. Not sure what condition could create this, but there were no other problems I can recall other than that occasional bind. I guess worn shift forks could contribute.

So, maybe you're not actually "broken", per se?

Before I offer my thoughts, I have an 1100, and but looked at a diagram for the 1976 ltd. It looks very similar!

I can't see it being the neutral switch, that just pushes into the hole, and it's only the bearing in the end of the neutral switch that contacts the selector drum. What surprises me is that you say the neutral light is on, suggesting the bike is in neutral anyway, so not being able to turn the rear wheel seems strange.

Stupid question, but was everything ok before you took off the transmission cover and the neutral switch, when it was 'all apart'?

Could it be a clutch problem?

Are you sure the neutral switch is all the way in. I had a problem with mine and long story short, the little plate with the one bolt that holds the neutral switch in place was flat, so even when the bolt was tight, the plate didn't press against the switch enough. I simply bent the plate slightly so when the bolt is tightened, the plate presses against the switch tightly. The switch is only a push fit, as I'm sure you know. It only takes a slight movement outwards for the switch to make a contact if the ball bearing isn't pressing against the selector drum. In normal operation, there is a 'dimple' on the selector drum when in neutral where the ball bearing sits. If that's not the problem, it may be a wiring issue, or maybe the diode.

With the other (main) issue, it may be worth disconnecting the drive shaft. Then you can see if the engine drive shaft turns or not, and you can then check it's not the final drive.

When you say the light was on before, was the bike otherwise ok, and if so, how long had it been sitting?

I had noticed how strange the way the switch mounts. The bike sat about 4 years. Anyway my plan is to remove the switch and try again

Well except I move tomorrow. Back at the house in august. Gotta love it

while out in Oklahoma last week. I got on my back.... loosened the neutral switch... and viola! it was no longer stuck.

Note to self.... only replace a neutral switch when the bike is in neutral.... obviously it was pressing up against something on the cam
