Frame rust

#1

Post by DUGG »

I found this yesterday on my GL1100. This doesn't look good and I'm thinking should be fixed asap. I'm sure this has been covered here before. If someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

I had a couple of spots like that on the shadow 500 I bought a couple of years ago.
I ground out the rusty metal with a die grinder, blew out the loose rust and then soaked the inside with rust inhibitor.
I cut out and bent to fit patches from some flat steel bar and my neighbour welded them in.
I dressed the patch with a grinder and painted it. when I was done you couldn't tell it had been fixed.

From the picture it appears that the area was filled with water somehow and burst as it froze some time in the past. Ice is a powerful force. If it just stretched and burst and is not rotted thru it might be able to be heated and hammered back in shape and welded. If it rotted thru it is way more scary.

I would agree with the ice theory. The bike is under cover but not heated. That area looked normal when put up for the winter. But the area must of been weakened and is full of rust. Doing some research is seems this problem is most common on the left side due to the lean when on the kick stand. Although my bike when stored, be it for a day or months is on the center stand under cover. But who knows about it's past. My plan at this point is to cut that gusset piece out and make a new one with some 1/8 steel and weld it in. That will give me the opportunity to clean that area out and treat it for rust and make sure there is a drain for the water to get out.

The first Wing I bought (an '82) had the same issue, but much worse. I started poking around with a screwdriver and ended up with a not so nice pile of rust. I also discovered why the bike had no center stand... When I bought it, it had those dreadful chrome stator covers on it, and being a Wing newbie, I had no clue what to look for... I hope the repair goes well for you.
