I wonder if just running any old 87 octane blend would serve the same function as "Techron"?

I doubt that running 87 would clean anything. It might keep the buildup from getting worse. You have to clean it first.

The problem with carbon build up is that it has a rough surface that attracts more carbon build up. So it will only get better with cleaning it first then do what's necessary to keep it clean.

I've seen a few bad words said here about using water to decarbonize an engine. I've done it in the past by setting the engine speed up a bit - maybe 2-3k rpm and using a squirt bottle to shoot water into the intake manifold. I've never had the satisfaction of seeing what the actual results were but I can tell you that a LOT of black stuff came out the tailpipe. My dad used to do this on his car, Click and Clack have recommended it and by golly I'll recommend it too.
