GL1000 Shock Disassembly

#1

Post by tomk1960 »

After a quick search here and no luck, I'm wondering if the stock GL1000 shocks can be disassembled? I'd like to polish all the various bits - especially the springs. It would be a lot easier to do this if they could be separated.

Thanks.

Quick answer is yes they can. Not the easiest thing because you have to compress the springs before the top will unscrew. Once the top is off, the springs and other pieces will come off. There is at least one write up (by me) on the site. I'll look for it.

Yes they can be taken apart to clean up. You do need a tool to compress the upper spring to remove those split keepers on the top of the shock, or make something that will accomplish the same thing.

Motion Pro sells the correct tool, yet I am sure someone will come along with a build it yourself solution.

One has to ask why you would want to. The original shocks on the GL1000 were terrible...

The OEM shocks on my '77 GL were fine, (including during 2-up riding) but they're a different design than the '78 version. This is my first '78 and I haven't ridden one yet. What made them so terrible and what is a reasonable recommendation as a replacement?

My '77's shocks were best described as "flaccid" when I got it in '91. I think the ones I replaced them with were from a Shadow but don't ask me what size after all these years; I do remember that it was a smaller bike but the shocks felt much better than the originals. I didn't ride it much before I added the sidecar....

I put a set of Progressive 412's on my 76. I loved how they made it ride. I also put the same shock on the 82 and loved them on it.

Hagon is also a good aftermarket brand .... they will customize a set to your requirements (within reason).

Does anyone have an accurate bolt size? Need new hardware where the shock mounts to the upper frame, and having this info without disassembling would be helpful!

Depends on which model you have. You should be able to find that info in the parts drawings on your favourite Honda dealer's website.

BTW: Welcome to the forum. Please add your your location to your profile (there may be someone nearby that can help) and your bike's model and model year to your signature so you don't have to keep remembering to tell us and we don't have to keep asking when you forget.

If you don't have a spring compressor this homemade rig for a bench vise could be fabbed up.
