Removing part number 12361-300-000 to adjust valves

The Honda service manual does not even specify that this cap comes off so you can turn the engine from the rear to adjust it. i just wanted to confirm that this cover is the part number I listed above. Now is the time to replace the thing with the rear wheel and gas tank removed.

It would be very easy to think you were about to turn the engine [clockwise] and ruin the cap before you realized that it was a cap--the same cap you see on Honda Twins that you take off to adjust the valves, according to the part number

Anyway, the PO has the corners buggered to the point that I am not entirely certain what size wrench is supposed to fit. Is it 17MM???

As usual , the Shoptalk section [by Roady on valve adjustment} is better than the Honda manual. I think i am right about this, but a confirmation would be helpful

That is the cap, I think it’s 17mm on 1000’s, and most early Honda caps are the same. Anti seize is your friend.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

The cap is used on many many Honda's. It is a 17 but if it is rounded then a vice grip or a cold chisel may be needed. the big ORing under seems to really get stuck sometimes. When you replace just barely snug is plenty. Inside there is a 12mm bolt attached to the stator rotor and that is what is used to rotate the engine.

I will probably use one of the metric bolt extractor sockets. At least with the gas tank removed, I can get a good straight run at it.

Thanks

replacement caps are only a couple bucks and available at most any dealership. Usually a couple whacks on the edge with a sharp chisel from the side driving it in the loosening direction will get it started.

The cap is normal right hand thread and After you get the 17mm cap removed, be very sure you only turn the rotor bolt clockwise. if turned the wrong way it can come loose and cause the rotor to move around and bad things to happen. ( Clockwise only ) once inside.
