Cracked side panels with paint I want to save

#1

Post by raiddrten »

Just in the corners, the side panels have a hairline crack. i really do not want to re-paint them and wondered how to re-inforce that area so the cracks do not open further. i was thinking about JB weld and perhaps a bit if metal laminated to the JB on the back side.

Also, they may be missing a mounting post and would appreciate a link how-to on repairing that.

I want to say they are ABS but I have repaired several with standard fiberglass repairs on the inside. For the tabs the easiest thing I have found is to make a new 90 degree tab from sheet metal and pop rivet it on. If done properly the rivets will be hidden by the seat and not noticeable without scrutiny.

The way I fix/replace broken tabs. Take a piece of aluminum angle. Forget the size but just get some that closely matches the stock tab. Cut it to the approximate length of the stock tab. Round off the ends a little bit. Now, on the covers sand the area down flat where the broken tab is. Then use JB-Weld to glue the aluminum tab in place. I've done this a few times.

As for the crack what I've done is to use fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin. Cut the cloth so it extends about an inch or more either side of the crack and an inch or so longer than the crack.

JB Weld will also work with nothing but a cut up Tee shirt. The key is to sand the area, where the patch will go, with 80 or 40 grit sandpaper. The deeper the scratches, the sandpaper makes, the better.

timely - raiddrten

I just discovered I have tabs missing...on a backup panel.

I'm gonna try the JB weld idea. That stuff is sticky and strong.

I wonder about making new tabs with some abs plastic and "welding' to the panel with some ABS cement??? A chemical bond not glue. Cut a piece of ABS plastic to the right size, put in the oven or with heat gun heat until pliable bend to shape and then attach with ABS cement..

This is how I have made sidecover tabs.
Weld the new tab to the sidecover using acetone instead of ABS cement.
Apply to both surfaces and clamp in place, add acetone to the seams.

I'm with RB. I've made numerous repairs on the 1500, including tabs, with abs sheet & pipe material, abs shavings, all using ABS cement to weld it.
