new GL1100-question about simplified brakes
I previously owned a GL1100 and was active here. I sold that a few years back to help fund the new home construction.
Now I am back in the game, so to speak. I am building a naked bobber/ cafe style bike for my brother- using his 1983 GL1100.
His brakes are a complete mess. They are frozen up, leaking, etc. Because we are simplifying the bike, I want to do away with the front/rear connected brake setup. Does anyone have recommendations or a tutorial here that discusses converting to a standard front/ rear setup where the front lever controls both front calipers and the rear lever control the rear brakes?
I would assume I could just run a two line setup from front master cylinder to both front brakes. What size/ bore master cylinder is needed for this setup?
Regarding the rear, is there a master cylinder swap that would allow a single braided steel line to go from the back master cylinder to the stock back brakes?
Thanks for the assistance.

Re: new GL1100-question about simplified brakes
The simplest swap (but probably not the cheapest) would be to use the calipers and master cylinders from an '82. The linked brakes used two different sized pistons on the front, and both masters were different than the '82. The '82 rear brake line would work inn the '83. I think I would start researching by comparing part numbers of components from each year. There are several threads discussing aftermarket front master cylinders, and I believe there are a few who have used the stock calipers, even though they are different, but don't take my word for it, lol! Also be aware that the Aspencade models were different than the Standards and Interstates.

Re: new GL1100-question about simplified brakes
14mm master, run two lines from the master (double banjo bolt) to the front wheel calipers. No need to change the calipers. Works great. It's what I've run mine for the past 7 or 8 years. Stops on a dime with lots of control. I used a master from a VFR.

Re: new GL1100-question about simplified brakes
I've got the complete front setup from an 81 or 82 that I bought at a swap meet yesterday I would consider a trade after I get a chance to check to make shure they work good. I just bought them as spare parts they are complete with brackets hoses both calipers master cylinder and lever.

Re: new GL1100-question about simplified brakes
Just an FYI, the '80-81 uses a different front disc than the '82. I've not compared them side by side, but they might not be interchangeable. 80-81 are single piston calipers, 82 are two piston calipers...Everett wrote:I've got the complete front setup from an 81 or 82 that I bought at a swap meet yesterday I would consider a trade after I get a chance to check to make shure they work good. Re: new GL1100-question about simplified brakes
The 1200 I am finishing up is set up this way (and I have done others as well) Just run two (stainless steel) brake lines to the rebuilt front calipers from the handlebars and a single line from the rear master cylinder around to the rear caliper. I used a single stainless line there as well. Original MC at back and a 14mm at the front. Brakes work great. See my build "All it needs is a battery and maybe a carb clean"sunnbobb wrote:14mm master, run two lines from the master (double banjo bolt) to the front wheel calipers. Re: new GL1100-question about simplified brakes
These calipers I got yesterday were dual piston and both hooked to a junction block that go to the master cylinder. After looking at the parts fish this set up is off an 82 gl1100.

I couldn't pass them up for $20. I sold them today for 10 times that. I didn't need them just got for future use.

I'm not sure I'd be bragging about that since you offered them to me as a trade, then proceeded to sell them right out from under me without saying anything. Re: new GL1100-question about simplified brakes
The rear master has a hard line that runs to a splitter. From the splitter there is another hard line that connects to the hose for the front caliper. You will have to swap out a different rear MC. You can use a MC off a 1800.RB wrote:And cap off the outlet to the front caliper on the rear master..that's it..
