Working on the mixture settings.

If you unscrew the pilot screws on the carbs, does that make the mixture leaner or richer?

Richer. Like "unscrewing" a water faucet. They control liquid gasoline flow, not air. ;)

Depends on which side of the throttle plate it's on. If it's on the air filter side it adjust air, and on the head side it adjust fuel. Usually out is richer.

It's the last screw before the mixture enters the cylinder so assume that increasing it makes it richer.

Well I could've sworn mine was an air screw. 'Tis on the CB. I can't determine from the manual so I'm probably wrong. Sorry if I gave you bad information.

Just checked Randall's GL1100 blog. Out is richer. Apologies.

That so far seems to be the rule of thumb. My 77 cb750 F2, 71 cb350 twin and of course my 83 GL have that screw on the head side of the throttle plate and out is richer on those. The carbs that were on my kids 73 cb750 though had those screws on the airbox side of the throttle plate and out was leaner on it.
