cooling fan issue

Nope, but but I'd say low voltage?? try direct jump from batter see if it spins like it should?? Corroded loose wiring? Blade hitting/touching something..making it hard to start up?? bad bearings in the fan??

Yea the fans themselves do not have a know issue. Pretty great reliability so I would concentrate on eliminating the electricity supply as RB stated.

I' guessing a high resistance connection somewhere in the circuit. Corrosion in a plug would cause it.

The most likely suspect would be the connection at the temperature switch.

Check the resistance across the temperature switch when it's closed (bike hot). Should be near zero ohms.

12 volts straight to the fan plug (on the GL1000 - Blue is positive, black neg). The fan should spin right up.

If all of that checks out, put a gremlin bell on the bike. If you already have a gremlin bell, clean it and move it closer to the ground.

Fix #2 would be to put a remote pull-start cord on the fan motor. You could run it up next to the temp gauge so if you notice the bike overheating, the cure is right there too.
