Now I'm curious... being that the speedo gearbox is on opposite sides, couldn't one simply reverse the wheel? Are the gearboxes similar enough that it would work (aside from the brake/rotor issues)?

No, the cable would spin in the opposite direction. The meter only registers in one. Kind of like driving a car backwards does not turn the odometer (reduce mileage).

Think about that for a second. Where would the speedo drive face? ;)

I guess I didn't post my question clearly... is the interface between the wheel hub and the gearbox the same or similar enough between the two styles that one could keep the 78 forks, gearbox, etc, and use a 77 spoked wheel by reversing it, which would keep the 78 gearbox on the original side? I don't have both handy to compare at the moment.

The drive hook up to the cable would either be pointed the wrong direction (as in forward) or it would be on top of the axle not the bottom. Plus there is a stop lug on the lower fork tube that keeps it from rotating that would be an issue.

Any spoked front wheel from GL1000, CB750, CB550, CB500 up to 77 will fit and take the rotors you have.

It appears that the drive boxes are different diameters between spoked wheels and Comstars and don't fit the recess on the wheel properly. So it doesn't look like you could use an early drive on a reversed late wheel.

Thank you for that clear answer to my obviously 'muddy' question, lol! I somehow couldn't come up with "Will an early drive box fit a later wheel?" lolol lolol lolol
