another thread size question

#1

Post by 5speed »

does anyone know the thread size for the rear upper shock mounts on a 76?
My 10mm 1.50 tap won't work.
I checked the thread pitch with my gauge and it is telling me 1.25. the only die I have with a 1.25 pitch is a 9mm and it's to small.
I even tried a 3/8 course and fine and no go.
I need to make a spacer and was hoping to cut threads in it he same as the shock mount.

I sort of came to that conclusion but my tap and die set I thought was pretty complete and I don't have a 10mm x 1.25.
I've pretty much convinced myself to re cut the shock mount threads to 3/8 course to match the "spacer" I have but thought I would check in case the threads were buggered up on the stud.

I think either solution will , but if it were me I would get the right tap. Its the right thing to do, and might prevent you from becoming "the previous owner" we hear so much about

I just got thru with the same problem. I bought mirrors for the Wang. I could not find a 10m x1.0 so my solution is Locktite thread replace. Pour it in the hole screw the bolt in, wipe off excess, wait 5 minutes. remove bolt. wala, 9m 1.5. :-D

This is going to be my spacer.
I will cut it to length, re thread it and it will go between the shock end and the bracket for the saddle bags.

yes.. although I think I'm going to go with either black lacquer paint or powder coat. The saddle bag frame will be black plus I'm not a big fan of shiny things. lol

Just my opinion here and there is always specific concerns or needs but if the machine is metric try to keep it metric and if it is inch then keep it inch whenever possible will minimize confusion and problems down the road.

I do attempt to do that..but when I didn't have a 10mm x 1.25 die I began wondering if the stud was another Japanese only thing like their screws...lol
I have a tap on the way so I can recut the threads in the nut.
And I was successful in my hunt for 5/8 well nuts for the saddle bags. :-D
