Right side Carbs no fuel

#1

Post by bbuice »

Due to a home remodeling project my 75 GL1000 got trapped ing the corner of the garage and has bee sitting for about a year. The project is finally over and the garage cleaned out so I decided to fire up the wing. I am getting ing no fuel to the two right side carbs (the high side when on the side stand.) The plugs are getting spark. The bike will run on the left two cylinders. What would cause the two carbs to have no fuel? Maybe the float needles? Is that the first thing to check?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Question first... how have you determined no fuel? Have you opened the float bowl drain screw and found no fuel? If so, then yes, most likely stuck floats and/or needles.

If there is actually no fuel in the carb bowls, then as said above, your needle valves are likely stuck shut and not letting gas flow into the bowls.

If there IS fuel in the carb bowls and those cylinders aren't firing, then your pilot jets are plugged up from the old gas sitting in them for a year. If the pilot jets are plugged, you're due for a carb rebuild to clear them.

Maybe too late now, but don't ever let carbs sit with old gas in them for more than a month or two, even with fuel stabilizer in it. If the bike is gonna sit for a month or more, drain the fuel out of the bowls using the bowl drain screws.

Good luck with it.

I agree with not letting them sit with fuel in the carbs, but others don't. I've always had good luck running the engine totally out of fuel, then draining any remaining dribbles out of the bowls.

Well, I loosened the drain plugs and ta little bit came out. I left the plug out and cranked the engine and no more gas came out the drain. So I guess the float valves are stuck? Is there any chance of freeing them up without taking the cab rack out? Maybe shooting some carb cleaner into the bowl through the drain hole? I know I am reaching but I really don't want to take this carbs out.

You can try shooting carb cleaner into the bowls, but beware, carb cleaner can ruin the engine paint. Another possibility is to lightly tap on the bowl with the engine running. Just my opinion, but if the needles are gummed up enough to stick, you're going to be dealing with other gummed up stuff in there too. Pull the carbs now, or mess around and end up pulling them later. My 2 cents...
Good luck!

Like Track T said. But I would pull the carbs, and do it right. Easier in the shop, then on the side of the road

Looks like a rebuild is in order. I don’t know anyone in Atlanta that will do it. The shop I used a few years ago now only does restorations. Any suggestions?

Thanks again for your advice.
