Kickstand switch

#1

Post by tlbranth »

At present I'm doing my best to make my wiring too complicated to believe. Part of the project involves adding start and run safety logic found on modern bikes. One of the things I definitely wanted was something to prevent me driving off with the kickstand down (something I do often on my '75 GL and my '70 CB). The tricky part is coming up with a decent kickstand switch. I tried a subaru door switch but that didn't work. Now I have a GL clutch switch and it works nicely. In my case welding was involved but I think even that could be avoided. The good thing about this switch is it's Japanese, it's still available for $8 and it's small but robust. It's also normally closed which worked for me. A real benny is: you can grind off that rubber doohicky that doesn't work and looks pretty stupid. Here's a pic (footpeg removed for clarity):

Nice install. Can you post a schematic of the wiring you did for this? More than one way to resolve an issue.

I had the same issue, road off once or twice with the kickstand down. Pondered the issue for a while. Finally installed a side stand switch off an 1800. Wired it in and all is well. The side stand switch for the 1800 is used throughout the Honda motorcycle line so it does not have to come from an 1800. BMWs also use a similar switch. Here is my thread on how I did the install: http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=31378

my 82 1100 has a side stand indicator light I'm assuming from the factory. It doesn't disable the engine from starting with it down though.

Red - my bike is completely rewired and the safety stuff deeply entwined so a simple show wouldn't be possible.

5speed - You would want the engine to start with the stand down if it's in neutral.

It does..but I never attempt to start it without the clutch disengaged either.

It prevents you from putting it in gear with the stand down.
