i appreciate from scouring various threads that the clutch switch (located by the lever) is one of two safety device to ensure you can't start the bike when it's in gear. the spade connectors on mine have a habit of falling apart and just hanging there, so my question is... is there a wrong way of reconnecting them? i've swapped and reswapped with no obvious change/detriment, but i really don't wish to attempt starting the machine when its in gear just to prove a point to myself

i even hesitate to ask because of my last post - imminent seizure - and the fact that because i am waiting to move house, i haven't got around to 'looking' at the clutch, which is where i believe my problem lies.

They can go either way. Impossible to screw that one up!

Do you mean they fall off the connectors? If so then you may not be putting the connector on the spade correctly. It is easy to assume they are connected, when you really have it only in between the plastic covering on the connector and the actual spade connection.
If that is not the problem and the spade connector is enlarged and not gripping the connector on the switch tight, then use some needle nose pliers to squeeze the connector slightly to fit the switch connection snugly. There is no correct wiring position on the switch, either connector will work in any position once correctly installed.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.

1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.
