1980 GL1100 interstate

#1

Post by TorontoGL »

Excited to write my first post (after introductory post).

I have a 1980 interstate, managed to get all the bags, trunk, chrome etc off the bike. Next was to remove the fairing which was a lot easier task than I had imagined. I like the naked look (though not as much as my earlier 1978 GL1000). I have searched forums for my couple of concerns but did not come across any post to answer (may be it was discussed years ago}.

I am stuck at two points,
1. When removed the counter weight, all wires and connectors I assume will fit into headlight cowl, however how do I go about connecting headlight and turn signals. There is one sub harness coming out to fairing. Is there are ready to install harness available as I would not like to cut/strip wires, would like to keep all components safe to convert back to interstate.

2. How did you guys address tank/ shelter since this one has pinstriping right in the middle of tank and no emblems.

Have secured, grab rail, tail light, rear turn signals, front turn signals, headlight
Still looking for front fork ears to mount headlight.
Thanks,

There should be connectors on the turn signal wires which should just plug into your new turn signal wires, headlight plug should be the same and plug right in to your head headlight, yep those 1100 standard ears are hard to find..

Hi
Thanks for replying. I have one sub harness coming from behind the counter weight and a big connector for fairing.

Headlight wire has one side bulb connector and other side 3 wires with their respective bullet connectors. Same for turn signals, 2 wires from each turn signals with bullet connectors. Didn’t find any place to hook up these connectors.

The fairing sub harness is plugged directly into the 'standard' harness, essentially extending the wiring to the fairing. The connection is in the box behind the weight. There should be no need to cut/splice if you're using stock parts.

Ok thanks
Shall look into it later today.

Meantime, after I removed the shelter, noticed something melted out of this guy in the picture.

Those are the ignition modules/ignitors. That is common on those. They will still work ok. Some guys take them off and refill with an epoxy. Some just leave them as is.

As Robin says, that's common, but I would suggest that you clean the connectors and grounds on the wiring harness. Heat is an indicator of added resistance, and poor connections contribute. My 2 cents.
