77 ignition coils

#1

Post by leggman »

The plug wires on my 77 are in bad shape.
Can they be replaced or are they made into the coils?
I also remember reading something about dodge neon coils on a goldwing. Is that a easy thing to do?

Thanks ... Dave

Wires are integrated into the OEM coils. Neon coils have been used (I've heard). I went with Dynatek. I would imagine there are many, many workable alternatives if you're industrious enough. Pretty simple hookup. The only point to remember is the "wasted" spark aspect of these ignitions. It's not that it's a problem, but is what allows (and requires) the use of two dual output coils.

What king of ignition? Points or electronic? The Neon coil is an easy swap but may require additional ballast resistance as they are very low ohm coils.

Coils and wires from many 84 and up through the 90’s Honda are three ohm coils. Many use gl1500 coils as they’re still quite cheap and plentiful.

You can also cut the wires off and add a connector/splicer device to add new wires, caps etc.

Are the stock plug wires solid core? if they are then a splice might just work.

You really don't want to entrust your ignition secondary voltage to a splice. Might work. Might work for a while. Might not present a balanced resistance.

I'd look for an alternative. Like cheap used coils. (Neon, GL1500, etc.)

No experience with them other than to say they look like a blatant copy (probably Chinese) of the Dynatek "GREEN" coils.

Someone else here used them several months back. I can’t recall the thread title. I think someone else had some that were maroon or red color but Dyna clones.

The splice is just like the attachment to 1100 coils it's a pressure cap connector not a home made deal.

Potential issues with splices are the entire basis for the preference not to use them. Ideal splices would present a zero ohm resistance to the circuit. Bad can be anywhere from 10 ohms to open. Four plugs with widely varying splice quality "might not present a balanced resistance." I didn't speculate on resulting performance impact, just stated a fact.

That'll work if you're set on retaining 40 year old coils...but replacements are cheap and plentiful. I can see applications other than salvaging original equipment. I've not personally run into any.
