Oil leak.....again!

I started the bike up to check things and noticed the tale tell oil drip from the belt covers. Thought I'd sorted the crank shaft seal problem from this thread, https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=62996, but apparently not!

As discussed in that thread, think I'll look into getting the crankshaft sleeved, but before I do that, just need a couple of things checked.

I know I've already asked this, but if any of you guys have an 1100 spare's engine, can you check where the two engine casings meet in the crankshaft area. If you look at the photo of my engine, there appears to be a gap on one half. It looks smooth so hopefully not damaged, but it just doesn't look right.

If that's good, then the next question is how far in does the seal go? I assume all the way, as far as it will go, but thought I'd ask.

I'm not sure about the gap your arrow is pointing to. It could be for oil return, but that big notch in the case just below the arrow would concern me.

It appears to be an oil return relief so the oil that comes out of the side of the bearing has somewhere to go. The seal should only go in until flush with the exterior of the case, otherwise you will block the oil return and it can only push past you seal at that point. I agree with DUGG, that nick in the case should be addressed, JB or even RTV should be ok as there should be very little pressure if the oil return relief isn't blocked.

I did fill that nick with JB when the seal was out last time so that's ok.

One post last time suggested the seal wasn't far enough in, the problem is in an ideal world, that seal would be fitted when the engine casings are apart. That way you could see exactly where it should be. As it is in my case, its hard to check the shaft, for grooves, or to see where the seal should sit. So, when you guys fit it, do you put it in flush with the casing or further in?

Oh well, onwards and upwards!

Chewey, since you have spent an hour or more to expose the crank, I recommend buying a sleeve kit.
$30 bucks. Then put a new seal, same size. Then you will have clean smooth metal an no more seaping.
Be sure to lube the part of the seal riding on the new sleeve. I did it to my 75.

Thanks Gowing, decided to fit a sleeve but just need to wait for it to arrive

When you fitted yours, how easy was it, and how do you achieve an oil tight seal between the sleeve and the crank?

The haed part is pulling all the stuff of to expose the crank. The sleeve will need a little modifying before you tap it on the end of crank. You need to grind off about a quarter inch of sleeve. The curved part. At least on the sleeve I got. Open the box, trim the sleeve, tap it on the end of crank. Oil up new seal, and carefully slide over end of sleeve/crank. Done. Probably takes 5 min. I remember another tough part was
tightening the belt sprocket, cause the motor wants to turn, and you loose your cam/crank positioning.
You won't have any problem, if I got it done most can do it I'm sure. With all the posts on line.

That gap referenced by your red arrow hopefully doesn't open to an area letting the oil out. The sleeve won't seal that, it will only provide a smooth area for the the seal to ride on. My thoughts are the oil
your getting in the area behind the cam belt covers is coming from a non perfect crank surface.
Also that gap that looks like a chip between the engine block halfs could be sealed up. Does it look like
It could be a trough to let oil go under the seal, I don't know. Maybe a motor builder will join in.

Just a quick update, contacted SKF and long story short, needed Speedi Sleeve no 99819.

Postman arrived with a parcel today, and those of you who have followed my stories since I started here, won't be in the least bit surprised to hear that I was sent the wrong one, namely 99817!!!! crying1

Only noticed when I went to fit it. I appreciate it has to be a tight fit, but the only way it would have gone on was if they had used elasticated steel. :shock: Checked the difference in sizes of the two numbers, and it's close to 3mm, not even close.

Will keep you posted, but as usual thanks for the help and advice, and the pm from Gowing.

It seems the more a person wants a part the more often someone screws up, the manufacturer, the seller or the shipper. Very frustrating. hang in there!

Finally got to have a go at fitting the sleeve with a warmer day, Christmas over and finally feeling sober again! :shock:

Due to the design of the sleeve and amount of space available, had to fit it back to front.

I then peeled the lip off as per the instructions, but this left a very slight overhang on the shaft.

Borrowed a narrow belt sander to trim the edge of the sleeve, which worked a treat, had tried hand tools but again space was a problem.

Using microfiche to protect the new seal, with the old seal and a length of large tube, I knocked the new seal in!
