removing fuel pump, tach. chunk

#1

Post by Wangthang »

Can I just leave it all off since I don't need the mechanical pump, nor the tach. drive? How is camshaft endplay controlled? I'm so lazy

A few here have simply taken a hammer and with a crisp blow knocked the tach/fuel pump end of the shaft off the cam. Then make a cover for it. I’m sure you could cut it off too.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

A wise man recently made an excellent recommendation when I went to electric fuel pump. So, here is what I did a couple of months ago - but I was keeping the factory tachometer:

looks like something I would do,......in fact I did   Removing it completely would require cover plate anyway, to seal against oil leaking

If you're talking about the modified factory piece pictured above, that was the idea Doug (Cyborg) passed along to me.

It is described here:

Full disclosure , the pictures are not of mine. Mine is painted to match the engine, but if polished, would look just like it. Desertrefugee did a great job.

That does look good. At some point, I'll consider alternate gauges, but for now, I'm happy with the factory stuff tucked under the fairing.

My Wing came without a fuel pump or the tach "elbow". I found one and if the pump does not function, then this is good to know. I figure it is about $120 even if I have to buy a new pump.

On one of my recent builds, lost track of which one but it is documented here, the cam rolled off the bench onto the concrete floor, the end with the gears for the fuel pump just snapped off cleanly. I made a flat plate like the one shown above and a paper gasket. Added a GL1200 electric pump. Didn't add a relay but should have.
