After rear brake rebuild blues

#1

Post by Wangthang »

I tried rebuilding the rear master, and caliper on my 77. I can't get it to pump up pressure. I removed the master cylinder and there was no fluid at the line fitting. I placed a finger over the outlet and when I actuate the pushrod there is a slight pressure at the opening. When I rerelease the pushrod there is a slight vacuum at the outlet. It's pushing and sucking lol. I have disassembled the master cyl. and everything looks in place confused22

A few things... First, make sure the rubber cup on the inside end of the plunger is facing the right way. The 'cupped' side should face the spring. Second, make certain the tiny 'spooge' hole is clean and clear. It's hard to see, and is right next to the larger hole under the reservoir cup. Third, it helps to bleed just the master cylinder before installing the lines.

You were on the right track when you put your finger over the outlet hole. You just stopped too soon. Keep your finger on the hole while you slowly pump the lever. You will feel suction then after a few pumps the fluid will blow your finger off the hole. At that point, keeping your finger over the hole, release the lever and hook up the banjo bolt and fitting. If there was already fluid in the brake line, all you have to do pump it up, hold the lever and open the banjo bolt to release any air in the brake line joint. Do that a couple of times and you should be good either continue bleed or just button it up.

+1. This is referred to as priming the master cylinder. Once primed, it will take less than 10 minutes to bleed your rear caliper.
