Make sure you're using the new crush washers. They can deform pretty easily.

6mm bolts. Same standard torque as the cover bolts.

I took a couple of threads off the three water pump bolts and installed the pump back into the cover today using the three new crush washers from the gasket kit. Time permitting I might get the cover put back on tomorrow. I am not very pleased with the water pump I got from ebay. You would think 82 bucks would get you a quality product. Not impressed.

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
which is why I sucked it up and bought mine from Honda. It will cost a lot more than the price of the pump to fix or replace the engine if / when it over heats.leggman wrote:I took a couple of threads off the three water pump bolts and installed the pump back into the cover today using the three new crush washers from the gasket kit. The 'BOSS" (Whiskerfish) has a shop rule .... if there's 2 hours or more labour in a job .... use OEM parts .... so you don't have to do it again for a while ....

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
Hmmm. I wasn't aware that there were even non-OEM water pumps available. I follow a similar labor/part cost rule, but I'm thinking of trying to rebuild one of the three bad ones adorning my parts shelf...
Hope it works out for you!

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
Well, I put it back together today using new o rings and gasket and so far I have NO leaks (fingers crossed). I was trying to start it and for some reason the starter kept running when I let off the start button. I thought at first the starter was bad but looking back on it it has to be the solenoid. I had even turned off the key and took the key out and it was still trying to start. The only answer I can come up with is the solenoid.
I think I might have fried my starter though, Are they hard to rebuild??

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
I haven't done my goldwing starter but I rebuilt the one on my wife's shadow 500.. very easy to do. It can be a bit frustrating trying to get the armature back in the case and "through" the brushes..but it teaches you new swear words..leggman wrote:Well, I put it back together today using new o rings and gasket and so far I have NO leaks (fingers crossed). Many times the brush holders have a small hole on each side. Push the brush in and insert a small pin in the holes. Once everything is in place, pull the pins and the brushes snap into place.

I didn't mention that because the starter on the shadow didn't have them.ritalz wrote:Many times the brush holders have a small hole on each side. Push the brush in and insert a small pin in the holes. Once everything is in place, pull the pins and the brushes snap into place.
