A while back a "How To" link was posted.....

Believe it was from the Gold Wing Facts site but I'm not certain. I thought I bookmarked it but apparently didn't 'cuz it's nowhere to be found on my system. I've looked on the GWF site but can't spot it, does anyone recall what I'm referring to? It had all kinds of stuff on it; I'm particularly interested in r&r the 1200 starter without pulling the exhaust, but it has a bunch of other "how to's" on the page.

To remove the starter on a 1200 you only have to loosen the right side exhaust and remove the nuts on the left side and remove the rearward most stud. The exhaust will drop down more than enough to R&R the starter. Also helps to remove the shift lever.

Soak all of the studs and nuts with PB blaster for a few minutes before trying to remove them.

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

No Eric, but that link has a lot of good info so thanks. Wish I could find that link, had all sorts of "how to" things listed by subject matter. One was how to remove the 1200 starter w/o removing the exhaust. It involved breaking open the starter while on the bike by separating the front end cap and leaving that in place while removing the motor section. Then remove the gear section. In doing so it gave more than ample room to back out the motor, something I found difficult to do in the past. To reassemble, just insert the cap/geared end in the bike, then reattach the motor. Included in the explanation were some specific instructions on turning the motor housing a certain way to facilitate the removal/installation.

I've never seen that one. Some exhaust are a little work to remove, but without the crossover, it just drops down easily. I leave one bolt in the rear and let it rest on the ground or hang from the frame.

BINGO! We have a winner, thanks Rednax. I thought it was from GWF but obviously not. I definitely saved it this time, lots of good stuff in there.

That's cheating in the best way.
