Starter O Ring

#1

Post by mmrabit »

All,
I have an oil leak and it seems to be coming from where the starter plugs into the motor.
How common is it for this O Ring to leak?
Looks like the exhaust would have to come off to remove the starter, sound right?
Thanks if advance for any advice,
Mike

Is this something new or did you just get this bike running after a long layup?

While there is some oil splashed around on the other side of the starter I wouldn't think it would leak at all. So no it's not common.

You can loosen the right side exhaust nuts and remove the left side nuts and the rearward most exhaust stud. The header and muffler will droop down enough to allow R&R the starter. Also pull the shift lever. I have seen guys remove the starter with the exhaust intact but it's a LOT easier with the above. I would also be surprised if, once you get the starter out, you would ever get it back in with the exhaust still attached and tightened down. Soak the nuts and studs with PB Blaster for a bit before you put a wrench on the nuts. They are tough fasteners and with care you should have no trouble loosening them.

Leaking around the starter is not common, but there are a few places nearby that are. The shifter shaft seal just to the front of the starter, the valve covers, and the cam seals all are prone to leaking, and oil has a funny way of 'appearing' in different areas, especially after some road time. I'd give the area a good cleaning, and then a thorough inspection before dropping the starter. My 2 cents...
