GL1100 clutch trouble

#1

Post by quadrunner »

I fix one problem then another one appears. My clutch will not disengage now. Before tearing the bike apart a few years ago the clutch was working okay. After getting the bike running I can't get the clutch to dis-engage. I think I have the cable ajusted okay as I have about 1/4 inch of slack when pulling on handle. When I first got the bike running the clutch was stuck so I gently put my foot on rear wheel and pushed down on it and the clutch seemed to free itself up. I took the bike for a short ride and it was shifting okay - no clunking while shifting gears. Now after the bike sat for a few weeks I can't get the clutch to dis-engage at all. The handle seems a little hard to pull on when trying to get the clutch to dis-engage.

I didn't do anything to the motor when I had it out of the frame except to put on new belts and tensioners.

Any ideas as to what I should try.

Start with the simple things... First, did you try to adjust the cable? Did you lube the cable? IIRC, the '83 doesn't have an adjustment to the clutch itself, just the cable. If you have the factory service manual, you might want to check to be sure.

I did adjust the cable per manual. It worked once after putting bike back together. Could it be stuck/sticky clutch plates? from sitting too long

I used Shell Rotel oil in bike?

Yup. Sure sounds like stuck plates. British bikes used to be (for whatever reason) especially prone to it. I didn't read the link, but a quick and dirty method for attempting to free them is to fire it up in neutral and unceremoniously dump it into 1st a few times. It's a little harsh, but often will break them loose.

A much better, safer way, that isn't as hard on the transmission, is to put the bike on the center stand. Then with the engine off out it in gear. Then tie the clutch lever back or have someone hold it in. Then rotate the rear tire. That should break it loose if the plates are stuck. It will turn hard even after they are free but if you can turn the wheel then they are working properly.
