Looking for 7/8" to 1" bar adapters.

Post by John Schmidt »

This is for my 1200 Std. project, I have a set of Valkyrie bars and controls mounted on it but it's not real solid. As you know, the bike originally had 7/8" bars which looked rather puny with the bigger tank up top so I went with the 1" Valk spare bar I had. Where the bars originally sat is made with the integral 7/8" pocket for the bars with a 7/8" clamp/cap. I find all kinds of adapters that bolt into the 7/8" pocket but are for mounting 1 1/8" bars, never find them to mount 1" bars. Does anybody have a source for such an item, drives me nuts looking for such a simple thing. I had a spare tree I tried grinding out that area to accept 1" bars but only made a big mess and never did get it bored out. Push comes to shove, I could take it to a machine shop and have them bore it out to 1" but just mounting an adapter is easier....and probably cheaper. Can anybody lend a hand, or an idea?

If you can't find an adaptor I had a small windshield that had 1" mounts for the 7/8 bars the GL1000 uses and it just glued two strips of rubber cut to fit inside the two half shells the clamps used to mount around the bars. That filled the extra 1/8" of oversize and didn't detract from the mount or look.
With it being the handlebars maybe another material like thin strips of aluminum to ensure it offers a tight and secure connection?

Sunnbobb et al have used a 1" sanding drum to enlarge the stock 7/8" clamps.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
