front axle
Hey guys, question. Once the axle caps are off including the axle nut, shouldn't the axle slide out easily?

Re: front axle
The axle 'should' slide out from the wheel easily, but years of corrosion can muck things up. A little PB Blaster and a few good raps with a wood block and hammer should free it up. Don't go overboard with the fluid or the hammer, however, unless you're planning on replacing the bearings anyway.

Re: front axle
Well, I cannot loosen the screw for the speedometer cable and I cannot get the axle to slide out. I've tried penetrating oil, an impact gun, the hammer and block. Any suggestions?

Re: front axle
Never saw one that hard to remove. Something else must be wrong. Look at it a little closer.......or a picture if you can

Re: front axle
Does the speedometer cable have to be removed to clear the axle. does the speedometer (gear box?) have any interference to prevent the axle from sliding out

Re: front axle
Ok, but it won't slide off. Dare I use slight pressure to, not wanting to use the word pry it off.

Re: front axle
Hard to say with out seeing it, but one side of the axle, looks like an axle, but is really a nut that unscrews. Is that side off?

Re: front axle
Then it has to be seized to the bearings. Any idea when the last time it was off?

Re: front axle
At least once, it has a aftermarket tire on it (worn). When that happened nobody knows

Re: front axle
Well, if you want to get it off, you'll need to keep at the penetrating oil and hammer. You can add heat, as well. The speedo cable doesn't have to come out of the housing for the housing to come off, IIRC. The culprit is most likely the spacer that goes between the bearings...
