Possible problem with transmission or clutch

#1

Post by SovietMike »

So I have my bike on it's centerstand for maintenance but when it's running and I have the clutch in I can push it down into first and it clunks and the wheel starts spinning. But you can stop it with your hand and it won't start spinning again until you let the clutch out. So I'm guessing when I put it in gear for that split second something is engaging and I guessing clutch? But I'm not 100 percent sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Unless I am missing something it sounds normal to me. If the clutch is pulled in/released and not dragging it is possible the drag of the rear brake and drive line is enough to keep it from spinning. My 84 does similar after the oil is warmed. You might look at the rear brake for dragging issues to be safe. Once the stickiness of the clutch discs is freed by your hand or brake it can be that free. If it is working normally otherwise.

But it doesn't start spinning until I clunk it into gear... But that's supposedly normal?

Until the oil is warmed up they can. Your clutch cable may need to be adjusted. When cold, 40 F, if I start mine in gear with the clutch pulled in the bike will go forward quite a bit. It scares you if you're not ready for it. These have an oil bath clutch and when cold the oil has enough viscosity(?) to transmit turning forces through the clutch. Even when warmed up on the lift the wheel will turn a little.

Normal. Most bikes with a wet clutch do that. Look for other things to worry about. ;) anim-cheers1
