fan switch Q?

#1

Post by Don R »

After a bit of reading I'm confused about which fan switch to get for my gl1000. Is there a final word on what part number works best? I'm looking at ordering a Borg Warner BWS-550 for an 80 accord but read it might make the fan run all the time if I have a stock thermostat. I used the thermostat number from the cross reference page. This one appears to be the correct length also, and has bullet connectors.

I know I can repair my old one but prefer to replace.

The only thing I can't say right now is..I haven't been able to confirm that it will turn the fan on.
I rebuilt the entire cooling system, let it idle in my driveway for half an hour and the temp got up almost out of the normal range, the thermostat opened and it dropped down to this.

Well, Borg Warner tfs 500P does not fit, looks right but the threads are too small. I'm off to scour the internet to see where it went wrong.

I ordered a $20 Chinese pepop off ebay, I'll put a parade switch on it too in case of failure.

Just buy NOS parts and don't worry about compatibility. Cheaper in the long run IMHO.

I agree. Just get OEM. They fit...and they work well with the rest of the system. Even used is better then some of the stuff coming out of China

I don't mind spending money to buy parts I need..but not when the price is jacked up just because. How can they justify charging $100 for that switch when you can buy fan switches all day long for $20+

Just an FYI, if you wire in a relay, it will take the load off the switch and help prolong it's life. If you're going aftermarket, you'll be doing a bit of wiring anyway. My 2 cents...

I guess I have enough used ones, that I never consider new. I guess I would go the same route. Had no idea they were $100 from Hond. That's insane!!

I bought BWtfs500P, it doesn't fit the threads, 2mm smaller. I missed that in the tech thread. I then went to ebay and got one for $20, it came quick and fit perfectly, it works fine, seems to be the correct temp and is probably made in china at the same place Honda gets them. The coolant looked good it was new over winter when I started servicing old consumable things.
The BW tfs500p fits gl500, cx, and some newer bikes as well as 80 civic and accord. I'll probably return it or sell it on ebay.

Thanks for the help, I rode it in town and on the highway up to 85mph today, it seems happy. After returning through town I had to let it idle to make the fan start. The fan sounds strong, the tach is starting to respond quicker since the new cable allowing it to operate again. I ordered a dual port outlet for my phone charger that has a volt meter built in, it should fit in the lighter port in the windjammer.
Next up, I want to find a set round driving lights to mount on a trick cantilever bar that bolts under the windjammer mount.
I did try to take the old one apart after soaking overnight in vinegar, no go, the brass began to crush so I stopped.
