Rotor cover broken? Can I still ride?

#1

Post by Chang_G_Wing »

Well as the subject says, can I ride with this off? Is there oil in there? I was adjusting my valves and totoally spaced and was trying to rotate the engine but stupid me forgot to take off the cover!!! Maybe it is ok to ride just not recommended? Or don't ride it? I don't even know what's in that area, I just know you turn that and your belts move. Sounds important. Thanks guys type1
Oh also here some pics as to what I'm saying.

The amount of oil flow back there has been debated several times. I believe that it is a mist but yes there is oil back there. No I would not ride it. It is the same plug used in hundreds of other honda applications and should be a shelf item in any honda dealer. Do not tighten it. Should only need to be snug, the oring will hold it in place.

Mine was broken when I removed it to do a project on July 1st. Since my GL is my primary transportation I rode until Thursday that week when a new one arrived. There was some oil that came out back there but it wasn't a large amount at all but still required a little more cleaning. I think I got mine on ebay for around $15 new.
To help you in your search, it's called a Tappet Valve Cap Adjustment Cover

^Pretty much this. That cap was used on a LOT of stuff. Heck, I'm pretty sure I have a 1972 CB750 motor in my back yard had has eight of them on it (I'll have to confirm).

If you can't get something local, let me know. I may be able to send you something. (PM me, otherwise I'll forget)
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

Your dealer doesn't keep much in the way of spares, does it? See if this link works:

If that's all that prevented me from riding I'd clean it real good and duct tape it.

I would wait until you can get the replacement part, and also change the O ring. I had one break on me, as I was doing it up the main part sheared leaving the threaded portion in the case! I hadn't even got to the 'snug' bit!
