1982 carbs

#1

Post by wayneperry »

hi all, bringing this topic over from member restorations. picked up a used 82 standard. PO tried to rebuild the carbs. Bike was pouring out fuel from plenum and he could barely get it started with full choke. II tore into in to it suspecting carb to plenum o rings and sure enough, not in the right placement. All other replacement parts looked great. set floats, as they were off a little, and put back on bike. No leaks, starts and purrs at idle. But, twist the throttle and it bogs down and dies. Sync on carbs look perfect. spray carb cleaner all around, no apparent leaks. I've pulled these babies out, torn down, rechecked every darn thing, 6 times, and I cannot for the life of me figure this out. Carb/break cleaner in every orifice . Nozzles are squirting fuel fine. What could I possibly be missing??? accelerator pump looks like it was replaced with all the other carb parts. Don't think this was a Randak kit, could this be a crummy rebuild kit? I'm really stumped. I took a known carb good carb rack off an 83, put it on the 82 and it runs perfect. So i'm missing something.. Any suggestions at all??? I've rebuilt a couple of 76s and had no problems. every dismantle, clean check readjust leads to same conclusion. throttle/bog down
sorry for the long story. Wayne  Also, I have a 79 rack in good condition, can I put it on the 82?

On first reading I was going to say check your valve adjustment then I got to the part where the 83 carbs worked well. I do not know much about 1100 carbs. Are they the same between the years?

Yep, all 1100 the same..pull the plugs after a bog down all wet?? or one or all, sooty, black, dry what?? But sounds like flooding if bogs when apply throttle..wrong size main jets??? on all four?? are the jets original OEM or replace from a kit..lots of kits have the wrong size jets or poorly spec-ed jets.

I didn't see anything about polishing the slides and making sure they are working smoothly.

Usually a bog is a lean condition. Have you tried running the carbs with the choke partially on?

first thing I did was suspect sticking sliders. They were sticking a little. I cleaned and polished, slide much better, but didn't make a diff. Yes, the more choke seems to allow throttle up. what are the jet specs? I'll look at plugs tonight. Thanks for all the feed back. I was wondering about the plastic donut and o ring on the sliders. pulled the donuts out of sliders to check the o ring [ which should have been replaced with rebuild kit } and two came out with fingers, too easy, compared to the other two which I had to use needle nose plyers. So, 2 felt like new rubber o ring and 2 felt like old used rubber o rings. Am I searching too deep here? how important would these be? Also the clamps on the intake manifolds are completely closing but carb spray around them didn't change much when bike idles, which it idles very good. Back out to the garage for more dissecting tonight. wayne

I did a set of '81 carbs last winter and had the same issue. Bottom line, it turned out to be the port on the accelerator pump cover. Take the cover off and be sure you can blow carb cleaner through it at the little square. Here is the pic from Roady's great tutorial:

If you cannot get carb cleaner through the square, then it is plugged. I had to spray cleaner in and then work a guitar string around each side to free up the debris.

But, he says, "Nozzles are squirting fuel fine.". I don't think that's the issue.

Possible, or they could be larger diameter than stock too. That would cause a lean condition. Just for testing purposes, for now, try putting a #4 washer in the needle (all 4). See if that helps/changes/makes it worse.

And I do mean a #4, not 4mm.

You guys have an Ace Hardware? I find they are the best for nuts and bolts unless you have a specialty store.
