Going Electric - Fuel Pump on GL1000

#1

Post by desertrefugee »

Persistent hard starting after sitting a while has me irritated enough to throw a GL1200 pump I had on hand onto my GL1000. I'd thought about just using it as a "priming" pump, but that's ridiculous. I'm abandoning the mechanical pump. For now, I want to keep the stock tach, so I need to keep the mechanical base, but really need to pull the pump off for clearance for the 1200 unit.

I'm not much of a metal fabricator (can if I need to, but it's too danged hot now in the garage). Anybody have a clue if these plates are anywhere near close enough to adapt to cover the void:

I cut the end off just leaving the tach drive, and had a welding shop do a plate over the end.

Darn good idea, Doug. I do believe I'll steal it. I just popped for a sacrificial housing off ebay...just in case I ever want to go back, I'll have a complete unit in the "box".

Hey Cyborg, ole buddy, ole pal. Is this where you cut the housing? I suppose a flat plate welded on, smoothed and polished won't look too bad...

Ya that's pretty much where I cut it. Perhaps just a bit lower. Since my aluminum welding is not that great, I had a shop do it. It was years ago, so I don't recall how much, but If I did it, its was pretty cheap

lol. Cheap works for me, too - although I did have to spring $9 (including shipping) for a spare housing. Gotta swap the gear over, but I feel better having my original, unmolested unit on hand.

Thanks. I'll be getting this done soon - preferably if I can catch a morning timeslot before it gets over 100 in the garage. Appreciate the tip. Dang good one.

Thanks for the tip, but that is one ugly unit. With respect, I believe I'm sticking with the 1200 unit if it works well enough.

I helped a local guy here last year with his conversion and we also cut off the fuel pump off like Cyborg but in a hurry and on the cheap, made a aluminum plate that was a nice snug fit inside and JB Welded it in place. with a bit of filing and sanding and a bit of rattle can dressing it has performed ok for him. I too like the nice Tig welded cap look.

You don't have to mount it in the open ;)

Interesting tidbit. My son hangs with the Baja crowd. The "real" Baja. One of the teams that fields an entry in the Trophy Truck class. One of their guys is supposedly a TIG "artist". He's saying that the housing is cast and doesn't always weld nicely. I had my son relay the message that I'll Dremel it into submission. How bad could it be?

...I'll find out in a couple of days.
