Whiskerfish wrote:The rectifier rectifies. You have 3 Alternating Current (AC ) wires coming from the Stator (the infamous 3 yellow wires). They go to the rectifier. The rectifier combines those 3 AC signals and rectifies that power into a usable Direct Current (DC) power that is then sent to the regulator. The rectifier on a 1000 is mounted to the front side of the Battery Box. One of the three yellow wires is split and a single leg of it goes also to the regulator.

The regulator regulates. Ideally you want roughly 12.8-14.5 Volts Direct Current (VDC) going throughout the system to operate the bike and charge the battery. Anything over about 14.5 should in these systems be sensed (via the black "sense" wire) by the regulator and shunted to ground. The "sense" wire is just a signal wire telling the regulator how much voltage is in the system and when to shunt to ground to prevent over voltage. That single leg of the split yellow wire is what is shunted to ground to control the regulators output. The regulator is mounted inside the left hand shelter.
But remember I have an 1100 with a combined regulator/rectifier!

Respectfully. Why?
In post #56 Aussie told you, "here is what i used . very common , cheap and easy to fit.. action1 but with the modern reg/rec you wont need it. guaranteed. :orange "

Save your money and spend it on something useful.

Perhaps........since the old battery has been "boiling",

A. New. Battery. would be a more prudent investment? ;)

If you're asking 'why' as in why are you bothering, it's just that everything I do never goes as it should, and for a few pounds I can, as I've said, move onto plan B, more like plan M in this case. However, so many of you have said it will work when I get the CBR rectifier, I'm quietly confident. But just in case ..............................

"just in case", obtain a new battery and properly and completely service it before installing on your bike.

(go back to post#63)

Done. tumb2

My battery isn't that old, holds charge when not in use, so sure it is ok. But that's something else to consider.

You can get a 4 or 5 pin automotive relay. The four pin relay schematic is:

The 5 pin relay schematic is:
5-pin-automotive-type-12volt-40-amp-relay-operation.jpg

The only difference between the two is the additional pin 87a. This pin is live when there is no power supplied to the relay through terminals 86/85 as per the 4 pin relay. Generally don't use pin 87a unless you have a need for power when the bike is shut down.
