Randakk's Timing Belt Cover Removal Tool - Worth It ! ! !

#1

Post by WingMan71 »

I work on a lot of Gold Wings in my shop so if I find a special tool that's really worth it, I'll buy it.

Randakk's Cycle Shakk makes a GL1000/GL1100 timing belt cover removal tool that's really neat. It allows you to remove the covers without even loosening and moving the radiator, let alone removing it all together.

Yesterday I replaced the timing belts on my new-to-me '76 GL1000 LTD, and the tool did the trick. No need to move the radiator!

Here's some shots. This one shows the covers removed with the radiator still in place.

Here's the tool by the removed covers.

Here's a shot of the swivel end of the tool being used to remove the inboard cover bolt on the right side, which is the hardest one. Easy with the tool!

Here's a link to the tool on Randakk's site:

PS) Randakk's site says that you still need to move the bottom of the radiator forward to get the cover bolts out once loosened. Would it be easier to get the inboard two bolts out with the radiator moved? Yes. Is it absolutely necessary? No.

Here's what I found:
The only bolt that is a bugger to get out without moving the radiator is the inboard one on the right side, but if you've got small hands and just a bit of patience, you can wiggle that one out once loosened with the tool with the radiator in place. The trick is to pull the loosened cover out to the right just a bit until you can reach the loosened inboard bolt and then pull it out of the cover by slanting the bolt up and to the right a bit. Getting that bolt back in is a bugger as well. First put the inboard bolt back in its hole in the right side cover, then wiggle the right side cover back on while making sure that the inboard bolt stays between the top and bottom sections of the timing belt. Then secure the right side cover in place with the outboard cover bolt. Make sure the cover is lined up straight and then tighten the outboard bolt. Then, reach in from the LEFT side (left side cover not on yet) and wiggle that bolt into its hole in the right side cover and get it started (at least the threads started in the hole) with your fingers and then finish tightening it with the tool. (You may cuss once or twice to get that.)

Yes, it's a bit expensive for a simple flat steel tool, but well worth it in my mind. Makes the job much easier.

Well done Randakk's!

I didn't do it to mine but the next time I have the rad out I'm going to change that bolt to a stud. Why Honda didn't do that is beyond me.

Might want to examine the clearance on that closely before you do. Not sure there is room to get the cover past a stud sticking out there. I know some that have cut the heads off the inside bolts and glued them on the cover. If the rubber seal is in decent shape the outboard bolts hold it just fine.

I bought a copy from Saber Cycle. I know the problems with them but I never had a problem with the 4 items I've bought over the last 20 years. It works but is cheaply made and the swivel part is a little loose. Only used 1 time so far but did the job. Paid about $12 or so.

I have an old cheap one made from stamped parts. I think I got it from my Father. I reworked it and it works good now. Stiffened up the pivot point and welded on a 10mm box end to the working end. Not pretty but it does the job.

I'm one of the crowd who doesn't run inside bolts...and I don't glue on the heads. I don't often find myself riding in the rain around here (not that it would hurt anything).
