I've had a 1000 engine in my '83 for 20 years and now I'm preparing an 1100 engine to replace it. I am going to use my existing Dyna S ignition and '79 carbs and the cams from my '77 parts engine.
https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=61168
I have removed the pulser assembly but I haven't taken the rear cover off yet (the gasket is leaking so it is next). I see from the parts diagrams that the Pulser Shaft is a separate part so I would prefer to leave it off entirely. Do I need to make a plate for where the timing case was or can I just use the 1000 rear cover instead?
Has anyone done this before?

I do not know but I probably should!! Be interested in the answer. Maybe check a parts breakdown and see if the gasket is the same?

Re: Can I use a GL1000 rear engine cover on an 1100 engine?
I'm pretty sure the gasket is the same and it looks like it will fit. But as of this morning I am leaning towards using the 1100 cover anyway. I think it would be less work to make the plate than it would to strip the layers of paint & corrosion off of the 1000 cover and it would be easier to put things back to original if I ever decided to. I think I'll put all the parts I remove from the 1100 engine together with the carbs so that when it comes time to rebuild the carbs again I can have the option if I want.

If it fits, and if early ignition, or C5 are fitted, would you be able to mount the kick start feature to the 1100?
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Can I use a GL1000 rear engine cover on an 1100 engine?
I thought about that. The current engine is a '79 and the last time I had it apart (15 years ago?) I asked on the forum and ended up putting the rear cover (with kickstart) from the '77 parts engine on it. I think I actually managed to successfully start it with the kick a couple of times. And what I thought would be an interesting novelty it has been in the way and an extra maintenance chore more often than it was potentially useful.
All that said, the the rear end of the 1100's crankshaft is plain so the ratchet part wouldn't go onto it anyway.
The next decision will be whether to polish the 1100 rocker covers or use the ones from the 1000 engine. The 1100 ones are in pretty decent shape but I have always liked the less boxy 1000 covers better. Besides, the new engine did not come with timing belt covers so I will have to use the ones from the old one and its rocker covers & belt covers are already painted to match and in decent condition.

please don't quote me on this but I believe I read the end of the 83 crank has to be plugged if you take the timing shaft out due to a oil passage ??. jb

Re: Can I use a GL1000 rear engine cover on an 1100 engine?
There is a recess in the end of the shaft that the timing shaft goes into. I just had a look into it and I can't see anything gthat looks like an oil passage.
I hope what you read was about plugging the hole where the timing shaft exits the rear cover... I picked up a nice piece of 1/4" aluminum plate today to make a cover for that with.

Re: Can I use a GL1000 rear engine cover on an 1100 engine?
I know this is an old thread but there may be someone looking to do this.
You can use any GL1000 rear cover, but you can't have a kickstart. The best to use is 78-79 without the kickstart, or use the early one with the mechanism removed and the resulting hole covered over or blocked up somehow. No oil passages nor anything else to worry about.
