Easy remedy for noisy tachometer...

#1

Post by Hrcnsfan »

I've been riding my '82 1100 without the tach cable connected for quite a while because of the chattering noise it produced. I lubed the cable but that didn't do any good. Of course, trying to get any lube up into the tach housing on a fully-dressed wing, without going through the hassle of removing the fairing, is about impossible. The other day I was cleaning the volume pots on an old guitar with a little can of Deoxit and thought to myself...why not!
Deoxit comes in small cans that fit in the palm of your hand and also have a straw to put on the sprayer tip. This allowed me to reach behind the tach housing and get the spray up into the nipple where the cable connects on the back.
Done! After a couple minutes the chattering was gone. So nice!
I searched but didn't see a thread mentioning this particular use of Deoxit so thought I'd pass along my success.

I doubt that the Deoxit was a magic elixir. It will start making noise again. Try spraying a lubricant in there when you sprayed the Deoxit. That will be a longer term solution. PB Blaster, cable lube, gun oil heck even Marvel Mystery Oil from and oil can. DO NOT USE WD40 which will fix it short term but in a few months WD40 it will turn to a waxy substance that attracts dirt and grime.

My '82 1100 makes that same growling noise in the tach. I've oiled, greased, lubed, heck, I would throw chicken bones at it and splatter it's blood if I thought it would help.....

Jdvorchak, the Deoxit does contain lubricant. The "magic" part is that with the tiny can and straw, it's easy to get to the back of the tach housing with the fairing still on and spray it up into the cable connection.
Cheers.

A non-conductive lube at that too. Seems like a good stop-gap to disassembly/cleaning - and you can stow the tiny can just in case. Interested to see how long it lasts.
