What are these?

Post by BikeMaine »

Please, what are these things and do they need to be bolted to a tab so they are grounded?

They are the igniters in an 1100 ignition system. They are usually bolted back to back to a bracket under the left side of the shelter. The bolt holes are not for a ground, I always assumed the bolt other than a mounting point acted as a heat sink.

How do the back sides look? They are notorious for having all the black epoxy sealant melt from the heat and ooze away... Mine had partially exposed innards and a lot of goo on the frame and components below where they mount. They seemed to work fine (still do), so I re-filled with rtv (yes, the dreaded rtv! ) and they've been fine for 3 years so far...

Only the igniters from the 80-81 bikes noted by black wire covers leak. In 82 they switched the compound and changed the vinyl wire cover to red.

Mine made a mess when the goo melted, so cleaned them up and filled the space with Araldite. Still work Ok!
