Lighting Issue

#1

Post by Carson.0 »

So when I got everything hooked back up from my build my rear brake pedal turned the light on bright when depressed and my front lever turned the brake light on dim. My new tailight I got since quit, (no running light, power to the led board but no light output) but the brake light still works fine. I also just noticed that when I press my front brake it won't turn the brake light on but not sure if that was the same time, shouldn't matter. I did however find out that if I press my rear brake to activate the light and I hold the front brake at the same time, then let off the rear whole holding the front, the light stays on til I let go of the lever.

Gotta love 40 year old electrical.

On a side note my clutch cable snapped today luckily I was half a block from home!

snip quote--"power to the led board"

LED Board? Custom electrical lighting work?

What is the model of your motor scooter, too? GL1000 or GL1100?

YES! you are very fortunate the clutch cable broke that close to home. tumb2

Sorry that first part didn't need to really be there I was rambling. It's a bates style tailight, I have constant power right to the led board with the lights attached but the lights don't come on so it's an internal problem but I have another one on order anyways.

My main question was about the brake light activation from the front brake. Won't turn on when you pull the lever. But if you step on the brake brake while holding the front brake, release the back brakes, the brake light stays on til you let the brake lever go.

Having no idea what bike you have I'll do this. On early 1000's they used a pressure switch for the front brake. It's possible you aren't pulling the lever hard enough to activate the switch. But when you also use the rear brake maybe you are pulling the front lever harder without realizing it.

On later 1000's and beyond they use a switch in the lever housing.

76 GL1000. I'm getting activation when I test the switch with a multimeter. Is there a specific on what I'm supposed to get across the pins?

LEDs only light in one direction. Are you sure that you have the polarity correct? Is the board grounded?
Its pretty straight forward to wire brake lights. 12V on will be brown/white, brake will be green/yellow (I've seen it as green/blue depending on model) and green for ground. Also check the diode for functionality.
