GL1000 valve cover leak

#1

Post by elslimdiablo »

I've got a left valve cover that I just cant seem to stop from seeping. I have oil dye in it and have verified it is indeed the valve cover and not the cam seals. I have swapped gaskets from side to side, installed new ones, replaced the bolt seals, and even sealed the left side with sealer. It still seeps near the rear of the cover. As a side note, these are not factory valve covers, they have Drag Specialty cast on the inside. I have checked the mating surfaces to make sure they're flat. Not knowing what the inside of the groove dimensions are for a factory valve cover look like, I am thinking that these valve covers are not up to standard and are not holding enough pressure against the gasket.
I do however have a set of factory 1100 valve covers. The part number for the gasket is the same for 1000 and 1100.
Will it fit is my question? ( at this point they are buried in my attic and will take an act of congress to get to them and I don't remember what they look like.) - Thanks - Rob

Kinda figured about the DS valve covers. I'll dig out the 1100s to see if it stops the leak. If I need the 1000 covers Ill throw something in the wanted section - Thanks guys!

I'm blessed with a set of the DS ones on my bike too. They leak out the bottom, the grommets, even the logo!

Depending on where they leak, you might try adding an extra washer between each of the cover bolts and grommets. The extra thickness might give you just enough pressure to aid in sealing. Just be careful not to over tighten the bolts, as they can snap pretty easily, as many of us have discovered the hard way! I've also found that if you're changing out the grommets for new, use the old ones to seat the cover as far as you can, then replace for new one at a time. Nothing sucks more than having the sharp edge of the cover hole cut up your new grommet!

The shims didnt work. It did however damage the new grommets. Fortunately I only tried it on the left cover and I over ordered the grommets, so I had extras. The channel the gasket sits in of the DS covers is deeper and wider then the factory covers, it doesnt matter how tight you get on that gasket, it leaks.
