Wiring difference between GL1100 regular or Aspencade

#1

Post by ram750 »

I own an 83 Aspencade that I am stripping quite heavily and quite A.D.D when it comes to wiring... I found on this site the diagrams but none are listed for the Aspencade , is there a big difference between the two ?

Thanks

I can't say 100% because I've never worked on an Aspencade, but it has been my experience when comparing the standard and the interstate, the main wiring harness is the same, and the add-ons (fairing, side bags, radio, etc.) have sub-harnesses that plug into the main harness. My 2 cents...

Classicgoldwings has an 83 Aspy wiring diagram in black and white. I think one difference is the electronic dash.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Track is correct. The main harness is mostly the same. the electronic dash has a loom of its own, as does the fairing.
I found the end of the internet

You will also find differences in the harness for the self-cancel turn signals. There is a box under the shelter with many wires. The neutral switch in the front engine cover has a wire for each gear + neutral. Save that, your can run an LED for each gear. The gages may also have extra connections, can't recall their purpose, maybe turn signal cancelling speed sensor.

Get both wire diagrams and trace before cutting. There may also be an extra harness for the on-board compressor for the air shocks.

Thanks for the info guys , but I really cannot locate a Aspencade diagram for free... these's helms manuals seem to have gotten to everyone. I found the Regular 1100 diagram but like you guys said that does not cover the rather intimidating "dash"

While I appreciate the desire to work on bikes on a minimal budget, the factory service manual for your bike will contain the wiring diagrams for all the models in your range. Think of it as a tool set you really need to have, especially if you consider yourself anything less than an electrical wizard. I found my new factory service manual for $45.00 on ebay and consider it money well spent. I also have a Haynes manual for my '83 Aspencade, Interstate, and standard, which has the wiring diagrams in COLOR. Being able to trace a wire from start to finish on the page and see the other connections to deal with is invaluable, and allow swapping components between models which requires inventive wiring to get it all to play nice together. If you have a computer in the workspace and don't mind scrolling for twenty minutes to find the right page, then buy the CD, but for me, give me a paper copy and a magnifying glass on a stand and I'll do battle with any wiring problem. "end of rant"
