Are you talking about the switch at clutch lever or the neutral switch low on the right hand side of the engine. Don't read every post but can't say I've ever seen the clutch lever switch discussed!

One thing that can cause your symptoms is excess carbon in the combustion chamber. When the engine is hot, the fuel gets a half-way ignition too soon by compression in the presence of glowing or hot carbon. If it's not the starter that's at fault, I'd do a decarbonizing activity i.e. squirt water into the intake with the engine running at 2 or 3k rpm. The pre-ignition fights the starter and it'll feel like a flat battery.

Finally got round to work on the bike again.

Ref the starter. Got the starter off, cleaned all the points of contact between the starter and the engine block. Opened the starter up, as I thought didn't appear to bad but cleaned up the copper parts but noticed there wasn't much grease at the 'front' end. May have melted due to the heat! Anyway, re-packed it and reassembled the starter, but need to wait for new o ring to test it. Not holding my breath and suspect I'll be buying a new starter.

Ref the neutral light. Checked the diode, working fine after having to get a battery from a remote controller for my meter! :IDTS: Clutch lever switch checked, appeared to be alright but will change anyway as easy and cheap! If anyone needs to replace that switch, the manual just says 'pry out the switch'. It actually just pushes out. I just used a screwdriver at the contacts side and pushed the switch towards the actual lever, after moving the clutch lever away from it's housing.
Next time I need to drop the engine slightly to test the actual neutral switch!

I've had an intermittent hard crank warm. If I switch the run switch to off - killing the ignition. It will crank over like it should, flip the switch to run and she'll light right off. Maybe it is carbon related, it does sound as if the timing is to far advanced. I haven't spent much time on the problem as it is intermittent.

That's how we start our race car with locked timing, get it cranking and hit the ignition switch. I've done the seafoam de-carbon deal on a car. It smelled like it was running on coal for a while.

Today went to the workshop, (it's just a garage as it has no lathe, pillar drill, welding equipment etc, but I do own a soldering iron and grind wheel :IDTS: ), to test the starter motor. Connected the stud to the positive side of the battery, and then gingerly touched the body. As you would expect with me, absolutely nothing. Thinking rude words and planning to buy a new starter, I then decided to try by touching the negative to the (now) bare metal that connects to the engine block. Guess what!

No, you are all wrong! It turned beautifully and a cheer went up in rural Somersham. action1 In fact I'm surprised the bike didn't start! lolol

I then moved on to the neutral light problem. Already checked the diode and clutch lever switch, so thought I'd test the (new) neutral switch. Can't get to it yet, my plan is to wait until I get all the bits and do it all at once as I don't have the space to leave stuff spread about to much.
So I disconnected the neutral switch wire and connected the positive clamp of my meter to the wire, and earthed the black clamp to a bolt going into the engine block.

Sorry about the quality of photos, but you can see in the second one that I had continuity, as the manual says. I then shifted the bike into several gears with the same result!

Now my thoughts are that that proves it's the actual switch that is at fault, but if anyone else has other thoughts don't be afraid to say, you don't normally hold back!
As I say, it is a new switch and I know new items can be faulty, but until I get it out and have a proper look, I'm guessing it has some how got stuck in that position! Even so, sure Honda designed the neutral switch to last longer than 5 miles! When I drop the engine to see, I'll also have a look at the oil strainer, but again, it should be ok, but worth checking for gunge and 'stuff'.
Anyway, going on line now to order some more bits, and hopefully be ready to ride out when the warmer weather comes!
Chewy999 out!

Still waiting for a couple of parts to arrive, but new neutral switch has arrived and tested to make sure it works before fitting. Will post the results when get chance to put it all back together. Must say, and I may be clutching at straws, but never noticed the hole in the switch before, so wondering if the the old switch was put in with the hole uppermost. Not sure if that would make the difference but will check when I take it out. Got some new heat resistant cable and covering, and changing the throttle cables too when the second one gets here. Thanks for keeping watching.

Mr Postman brought another box today. Started with checking the timing, all good, fitted the new clutch switch and put a new neutral switch in with a new heat resistant wire. Plan to extend it so it is easier to connect it in the future. Refitted the starter after cleaning it out and making sure all the points of contact with the engine block are shiny shiny! Cleaned the oil strainer while I was in that area. Started to put the engine back in and hopefully finish off tomorrow and go for a ride to see if I've sorted out the two main problems, namely the neutral switch and the starter. Got new throttle cables to go in as well as the other bits and pieces and sooooo looking forward to hitting the road.

Didn't quite finish today, but just need to fit radiator and exhaust, fill with oil and coolant, fit the battery and then see if I've wasted my time!
