Finished putting my bike together, the crash bars were a pain to get back on, one bolt just wouldn't line up! Anyway, got it eventually and went for a ride.

The new neutral switch worked perfectly, for about 5 miles and then the green light came on and stayed on! Last year put a new diode in, will check that it hasn't failed, but otherwise at a loss at where to go from here! With my visor misting up due to my tears, decided to fill up the tank. When I got back on it just wouldn't start. This is something I've experienced before. After a run with the engine hot, it won't start straight away. Left it for a while and then it did! No idea why that happens. It's as if the battery is flat, but in my head that isn't the problem as it starts when things have cooled down. If the battery was flat it would still be flat later on. I can just about guarantee that it will start from cold, no choke first time tomorrow, without charging the battery.

Any advice would be appreciated as always

So, it isn't turning over when it is hot?

Sounds like a starter problem. Actually the internal grounding system of the starter. internal ground strap that makes contact with the case when cold. All is well, But when the case heats up and expands, the ground is lost. Cools down, ground returns

One thing I've noticed is that the starter motor is very hot, not sure if that's normal. Can't remember where I got it from, but maybe it was flea bay, maybe I should check it out or if anyone can recommend one in the UK, then I should think about changing it, although it was a new item during my big build!

Any thoughts on the neutral light fiasco, apart from black tape over the light.

usually its a stuck sw. The sw provides the ground for the light. Unless recent work has pinched the wire.

A hot starter was a very well known problem with small block chevy's back in the day. People would put headers on them..and the heat transferred to the starter causing the same issue you have.
I was included in that group when I put new headers on my camaro. :oops:

Is it possible your new starter has a thinner case than the OE one and is heating up inside..

I did put a new neutral switch in this time and the wire appears ok.

Does the starter turn over? Or does it not start?
Stating the obvious here... but if the motor is hot you aren't using the choke are you? Throttle partially open or closed?

Never need to use the choke.

As I said, it's as if the battery is flat.

Usually starts after a while with clutch pulled in and throttle open .

So is it cranking over well and just not catching or is it not cranking over well?

Generally a starter builds up a lot of heat when it is dirty inside and not using the power efficiently or if there is an issue with the power (or ground) going to it. I had one that actually melted the positive terminal off the battery and it turned out to be a bad ground wire to the engine.

It was a 'new' starter a couple of years ago, may have to open it up and have a look inside.

It is NOT the negative cable that goes to the starter. It is black, but is positive from the solenoid. The negative is thru the case connection

You are right of course, it's been a long day. Just put it down to me having a senior moment! Just to confirm, my wiring from the battery is correct!
