Just had a thought! :idea: Ref the neutral light/switch. Does this sound feasible?

I know the switch is working.

When the ball bearing is fully out, ie in the groove of the shaft it works against, there is continuity.

When the bearing is pressed in, as in when the shaft moves because the bike is in gear, there should be no continuity, light goes out! But at the moment, that's not happening.

In my head, there are two reasons for that happening.

1. The shaft has worn so the bearing doesn't go into the switch far enough to stop continuity, I would have thought unlikely.

2. The switch isn't far enough into the block which would give the same effect.

The thing is, on my model, the switch is held in with a small plate bolted against the switch.

Now if for some reason that isn't tight enough, or not straight, it may not be holding the switch in the right position.

I'll have a fiddle in the next couple of days and come back to you!

Already posted this in another thread but today dropped the engine to get to the neutral switch properly. Took it out and checked it, then put it back in making sure it was all the way in. Secured with the plate checking it was lined up, connected the battery and went through the gears several times. IT WORKED! :R2D2
Need to do a proper road test when the latest parts arrive, but had a good day today

New starter arrived today so fitted it and went for a start. Must say it seemed to start easier so let the bike warm up, fan on and off again, then turned the engine off and went for a restart. Same as before, :( although did start on third attempt and didn't hold the start button for more than a couple of seconds. Now at a loss as to why this happens. On nights tonight so will check it will start again tomorrow when cold. I'm sure it will. At least the neutral light seems to be working as it should.

When it wont crank, try flipping the off/run switch to off and see if it cranks ok

I tried flipping the off/run switch, but didn't seem to help. That said, the new starter does start really well from cold, just the briefest of presses on the button. It did start from hot, but seemed the same as before, and I also contacted a GL 'Specialist', Colin Appleyard garages, and their main mechanic reckons this is an issue with Goldwings, can you try another starter!!! After just paying for another one from a reputable dealer, the answer to that is NO! Think I'll just have to go for a coffee every time I stop for fuel.

One thing I may try, is to run a garden hose over the starter while the engine warms up to keep the temperature of the starter down, and try to start the engine again. At least I'll know for sure that is the issue.

As usual, thanks to everyone for sticking by me on this topic.

i woulda checked (& still would) for spark on the hot start attempts, old coils are known to act up this way

I respect your advice, but I don't believe it is a spark problem, think it is/was a starter issue, but will check.

Finally got to go for a ride to check to see if I sorted out the problems I've been having.

Put it in neutral and the neutral light shone that beautiful shade of green. Put it in first and the light went out, and off I went. Went through the gears and the light stayed out, until I went back into neutral, and the light came back on. Worked correctly for the whole trip! Permission to shout HURRRAH very loudly!

Didn't dare stop and turn the engine off until I got home. The starter certainly wasn't as hot as the old one, in fact it was barely warm. So turned the engine off, went and opened the garage door and came back to restart the engine. It fired up straight away!! action1 Will keep an eye on these two things for a while in case it goes wrong again, but pleased so far.

To top it all, I thought I'd scratched the dummy tank with all my faffing around, it had a mark on it but was hidden with me sat on the bike. Anyway, got a little wax polish and gave it a rub, and found it wasn't a scratch, but just a mark that came right off. Boy was I pleased!
