Coolant Venting from Around Cap?

#1

Post by propav8r »

Hi all, I took my '78 out on its first long road test yesterday, and when I got home, I noticed some coolant spray inside the shelter and down the filler neck...it looks like the coolant was pushing up and out of the cap instead of into the expansion tank.

The bike didn't overheat or run hot, despite several 2-3 mile pulls up long mountain grades. Any idea as to why it might be venting around the cap instead of going back into the expansion tank? I filled the tank to just above the low mark and ran the vent tube down under the bike. The line to the radiator filler neck is submerged in coolant in the expansion tank. The hose from the neck to the tank isn't kinked.

It's a brand new cap...should've mentioned that. Just a standard parts store cap, I think 13psi.

Maybe new cap does not have the rubber sealing washer that seals the top of the neck to the cap and forces the flow to the reservoir. some have brass instead of rubber

That's a thought. I'll check that when I get home.

I guess I just got a crappy cap. I bought another one yesterday (a Stant instead of the house brand at the parts store), popped it on, and all is well.
