My wheel bearing tools

#1

Post by kerryb »

After learning the split-bolt method of removing wheel bearings, I was pondering the best way to put the them back in straight. I didn't trust myself to hit three different spots on the bearing rim with the same force each time. These pictures describe my somewhat crude, but very effective bearing driver system.
Pic 1...The whole system in use. wheel is suspended at work height on an upturned stool.

U se a piece of black iron pipe as a slide hammer over the center steel shaft and the bearing is driven in straight. Working out exactly when to stop hammering is the tricky part!

Hope this helps someone else with their creative solution to the next need.

I forgot the spacer on the underside to keep the shaft square to the rim!

It is a block of wood made with a holesaw and split in two to allow tapping it into the underside of the hub before the second bearing is installed.

Looks like a tool one could sell..maybe adding a thread section up where the rod goes through the hub and add a plate and a nut that can be thread up tight to the hub for the first bearing going in???
