Checking charging system....

#1

Post by katmol »

My battery on my '76 Wing died. What's the best way to check the charging system to make sure it working properly? Charging but not over charging.

Thanks!

First charge your battery. Then while running at 2500 to 3000 rpm you should measure the voltage at the battery terminals. A good charging system will show 14+ volts but not over 15 volts DC. Normal charging is widely regarded as 14.2 VDC measured at the battery terminals with the engine above 2500 to 3000 and above rpm.

Hey jdvorchak,
Battery charged, 3000 RPM's gave me 14.3 volts at the battery terminals. Now I can buy me a good AGM battery next season and not worry if my charging system has an issue.

Thanks for the help!

Very good. While we are on the subject. Have you heard of the 3 yellow wire white connector problems? There is a white plastic connector coming straight from the 3 yellow wire, which are the output of the stator. It is usually located right up next to the battery. On 1200's it's just to the left of the battery in the battery compartment. Your system seems to be working now but I still suggest you take that connector apart, clean the contacts with Electrical Contact Cleaner ONLY! Put some dielectric grease on the outside of the connector that pushes into the other connector. Then finish up by forcing dielectric grease on the back, or wire side, of both male and female connectors, to keep moisture from entering that back of the connectors.

Best way is to install a volt meter and you can watch it all the time. If things start to go south you'll know it before you get stranded.
