Good Evening Gents;
I have built a couple of clusters for my 1200 and the last time I used a Teleflex marine fuel gauge with an automotive tank sender and float grafted to the OE Honda sender 'chassis'. I also used a Teleflex temperature gauge mounted on the RH engine guard and modified an automotive drain plug (to get the proper thread) drilled and tapped to accept the Teleflex sender. I wanted a simple and uncluttered package so I omitted the tachometer and the turn signal indicator lights. This was okay for a while but I started to miss the tachometer and decided to go modern digital. This one recognizes the OE Honda tank sender values and as soon as I can get the speedometer's magnetic pickup properly mounted at the bottom of the forks I will post a full report with pictures. But for the moment, see attached . . . The only glitch is that there is no oil pressure light / icon, so I connected the wire from the first gear indicator to the oil pressure wire and it shows a red '1' with the engine off (and no oil pressure) with the '1' disappearing as soon as the engine fires and builds oil pressure. There are gear indicators for all 5 gears and I have only connected the 5th gear light, the rest I can easily feel through the seat of my pants.

That's a clean look. Seeing that setup makes me want to keep everything analog and mechanical. I definitely prefer a mechanical watch to a digital one. This is really making me rethink the direction I want to go with these gauges. This calls for more consideration.

Tested out on the bike. Lights are too bright. Add scroll work floating over the lights so they do not shine directly into my eyes. Not sure if I like the scroll work. The plasma cutter was a bit of a tricky thing to work with. I haven't had much experience with a plasma cutter. Gun blued the scroll work. It was too shiny.

Maybe I went too far with that last bit. Still not sure how to incorporate the fuel and temp guages. Need some variable resistors to show up in the mail before I can get cracking on the main project. Thinking the bar graphs will go up on the handlebar. Maybe a gauge mirror. I'm only running one mirror now. I could install another mirror with the leds mounted into it.

Hey man, this bike is your canvas. Enjoy it!

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

So. Does anyone know how to figure out the wattage value of a resistor for an application. So my circuit diagram currently has 100 ohm resistor on each side of the fuel sensor and on each side the temp sensor. I'm not sure what wattage of resistor to use. I was going to solder in some inline resistors in the wiring on top of the fuel sensor. I don't want a resistor burning out on top of my fuel tank, could be a bit sketchy burning out a resistor directly on top of your fuel tank. So for the factory wire gauge of a gl1100 and 7 volts or less running through the wires, what wattage of resistor do I need for in line resistors? I was gong to wing it with 1watt resistors. Maybe 2 or 5 would make for less of a fireball. Lots of info on resistors on the net. Not as much about matching wattage to the application.
Thanks.

Sure thing.

Calculate current through the resistor using V= I * R, solve for I.
The put it into this equation:
Power = (I squared) * R

That will give you the power in watts. Include a safety factor when sizing the resistors.

Post up your wiring diagram and we can all verify that they are sized correctly.

Realized recently that the temp sensor can't have a 100 ohm resistor on both side of it to get the voltage signal that I want. Temperature sensor is a single wire ground through the threads setup. I couldn't put a reistor on the ground side if I wanted to. I will have to experiment with reversing the function of the led display to get the exact same effect.

So what voltage range does the LED expect for full scale currently?

I think we can come up with something.

So that is the final circuit to get voltage signal to the lm3914 ic. The voltage signal will be backwards for fuel and temp guages. So the leds will need to be wired in an always on configuration, with the lm3914 grounding and turning off the the leds as the voltage goes up. Looks like voltage range for signal should be between around 60 mv to 4 volts. I might be able to get a away with leaving the v low on the ic at 0. Not sure about the resitance specs for the temp sensor. I will have to look back and find that.

Messing with the fuel gauge prototype. Lucked upon a nice delay effect in the input signal. Maybe even hysteresis.

Not sure this video worked because android phones don't seem to have QuickTime. But I manage to smooth out the input signal so the gauge isn't a blinking headache inducing annoyance.
