OK, old topic with a twist. On my 1980 1100, I am missing the locking washer on the clutch basket nut. (In frame) Nut won't come off with an impact or 3/4 drive breaker bar. Nut has some damage on it in both directions from not using the proper tool. I have concluded that they must have used loctite on the threads. I haven't found any evidence of loctite but don't know of any way to keep the nut on without the lock washer. Before I have to take the motor out completely, for which I have no time or room for, I would like to ask if heat will cause more harm. I know that heat will free up the "permanent" loctite but don't know if I will damage any other components.
Thanks to all of you that do this on a regular basis! I have been able to muddle through because of you!

Yeah, do that. Even when red Loctite was used I've been able to break it loose without heat.Whiskerfish wrote:I would get in there with a powerful light to make sure. That lock washer can be dang near invisible at times

Re: Clutch removal conundrum
I too have been confounded by the clutch job. I can't offer anything but encouragement and perhaps ways of not to do it. WF & Robin know whuts up!
BTW, eventually I figured it out and you will too, don't give up!

Re: Clutch removal conundrum
If you think you need to use heat to loosen the locktite, a soldering gun will provide enough heat to do it without heating up much else. My 2 cents.

Re: Clutch removal conundrum
Thanks for all your suggestions but as it turns out, I needed the right tool. I borrowed a Snap-on XT7100 impact and it spun off in less than 2 seconds. I highly recommend this tool but you might have to sell one of your bikes to own one.
