Float post repair?

#1

Post by jdvorchak »

I just bought two GS850 that have been sitting for a long time. Been rebuilding the carbs. On the second one, where the PO complained that the #2 was flooding over I found two interesting things. One whoever did the last carb rebuild put the wrong bowl on #2 and #1. Wrong? yeah... on these the bowl gasket stuck to the bowl on #2 and stuck to the carb body on #1. So what did he do? He put #2 on #1 carb. So he had 2 gaskets on #1 and none on #2!

Second when I got the bowls off he had also broken the float post so the float wasn't really doing anything.

Now my question is how do I best repair the post that holds the float pin? I don't really want to buy another rack of carbs for this thing.

I have two options of which I'm aware. One is use JB Weld and weld it back together. I'm pretty sure JB weld, not JB quick, will work fine immersed in fuel.

The second idea I had was to use some aluminum welding rod my son brought home. It's more like solder for aluminum than actual welding.

Or do you have a better idea?

John, I've repaired float pin towers with the type of epoxy that comes as a sort of two part 'sausage', where you cut a slice and knead it between your fingers to mix the parts. Much easier to use than a rather runny mix of JB since it is fairly stiff.

I tested some in gas for over two months to see if there was any deterioration, but there was none.

Thank you guys.

Kriss, Randakk repair is for GL and some CB models. Mine are Suzuki Mikuni carbs.

Fogey, I know what you're talking about and have used that stuff on "wet" repairs. Crack in an engine case to stop an oil leak and on a neighbors car for a fuel tank repair. I visited JB Weld web site and they confirmed that once cured, it can live in gasoline indefinitely. Since I am talking about very close tolerance that stick, molded around the post, might just be the best idea.

The stick should work fine. I have use JBWeld for this fix more than once. As you say, regular JB, not the quick kind. Those repairs have been in use for a few years now.

Hey Y'all,

I had a stubborn float pin and while struggling to remove it, I broke a float post. I decided to make the repair with Randaak's deluxe float pin repair kit.

I removed the other post and set the repair and got this:

IMG_20200919_132807.jpg (164.51 KiB) Viewed 377 times
That looked a bit off. I found that the diameter of carb body at the valve seat is 11.05mm, but the diameter of the recess on the bottom of the repair kit is 10.4mm. I suppose I should file the carb body at the valve seat area; good excuse to buy a dremel tool I guess.

In the meantime, my remedy was to file the old float seat holder to fit the recess on the bottom of the repair kit:

It sits flatter now but the pin center to adjacent flat measurement is now 16.5mm not 14.25mm as are all the other originals.

Can the float height be adjusted correctly with this remedy?
Should I grind/file the carb body to fit the repair kit?

As always, I'm grateful for this forum. :-D

I used a brass bullet casing JB welded over what was left of a post. I carefully drilled the pin hole, epoxied it and pushed it down until the pin was at the correct height. Pulled the pin, cleaned it and let it sit overnight. I don't remember the caliber, it came out of a box of misc. casings.
